A momentous moment in the nave of Durham Cathedral

14 September 2018

Every year, the North East England Chamber of Commerce (NEECC) hosts its annual dinner. The dinner aims to bring together a wealth of chamber members to celebrate business and its achievements in the North East region.

However, this event proved to be one of a kind in a multitude of ways. Hosted on the 6 September 2018, the dinner was the first ever to be held in the nave of the impressive and iconic Durham Cathedral. Making history, the aim of the dinner was to fundraise for the cathedral’s Foundation 2020 project which aims to support and protect the fabric of the building for future generations.

Foundation 2020 is a fund set up by Durham Cathedral with the purpose to raise £10 million to support maintenance and repair work of the landmark. Not only this, the fund aims to train a new generation of talented crafts such as masons, joiners and embroiderers and keep this generation of tradition alive.

Through a wealth of fundraising opportunities throughout the evening, a total of £75,480 was raised for the cathedral’s Foundation 2020 with over 630 business leaders in attendance contributing to this.

The dinner was also a historic moment for the Horizon Works team. As one of the headline sponsors of the dinner, Heathrow airport invited Horizon Works to be one of its guests. At the dinner, we were presented with our cheque to officially announce and celebrate us winning the funding. Along with fellow North East based business, International Glass Consultants we were honoured to receive our funding in a room full of key and influential business leaders including guest of honour and TV architect, George Clarke. Clarke was keen to express his passion for the North East and how the Cathedral itself has inspired him since childhood.

One of only 20 SMEs across the UK, we have been awarded a £2000 grant as part of Heathrow Airport’s ‘World of Opportunity’ programme and the Department for International Trade’s ‘Exporting is GREAT’ campaign. The funding aims to provide the financial boost needed to explore and develop export opportunities through trade missions, trade shows or market research.

The message of the dinner was clear; there is a wealth and vast range of successful and innovative businesses across the North East and this was truly an evening to not only celebrate this but to also acknowledge it. Paired with an iconic and key North East landmark, the event celebrated excellence in every sense of the word.
