Emerging Tech in Creative and Culture

26 July 2018

In continuation of the Emerging Tech events with The Great Exhibition of the North, we attended the ‘Emerging Technology in Creative and Culture’ event on Thursday 19 July which was again held at the Northern Design Centre in Gateshead. The event focused on the future of the creative industries and how technology is increasingly being used to create new forms of artistic expression, audience experience and creative practice.

We were given the opportunity to hear from multiple key speakers and their thoughts around how the creative and cultural industry will be affected by technology.

The event had a strong focus on how culture and technology can work together and help prepare Britain for the future and strengthen our position as a creative culture.

We initially heard from Margot James the Minister of State for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Margot stressed that the UK has one of the largest creative sectors and despite digital continuing to grow and disrupt we must embrace this change to continue to be leaders in this space.

In addition, we had the opportunity to hear from some key North East creative organisations. The first was Hammerhead, an immersive media company based in Gateshead in which we heard from Simon Windsor (joint managing director and co-founder). Hammerhead specialise in creating immersive experiences which as a result creates richer experiences for users. Simon’s approach to innovation was also one that stood out as he expressed that you should both ‘go with the flow and swim against the tide’ highlighting that you should embrace technological advances but use and apply them in a way that allows you to stand out.

We also heard from Dave Black, co-founder of Mixed Immersion. Mixed Immersion is a 3D audio production company that focuses on providing immersive experiences. They also regard themselves as the first audio effect (AFX) company to engage in immersive media. Dave discussed how sound is increasingly becoming an integral part of immersive experiences through modes such as virtual reality (VR). As technologies advance, incorporating all the senses into a user experience is something that will become more and more apparent with Mixed Immersion embarking on this to create a deeper and more real experience.

The event concluded with a fireside chat with all the speakers involved. Many key and interesting points were raised and discussed about how technology will impact the creative and culture industry in a positive way. It was expressed that across the industry we should encourage the acceptance of new technologies and although at times discomforting this is something that should be embraced.

Collaboration was also a large and emerging theme of the event. For organisations to flourish whilst technology advances we should make sure that we are open to the prospect of collaboration. Businesses collaborating and connecting will open us up to new opportunities and subsequently new technologies. As these new technologies can also be costly, collaboration could be the answer to share costs and still achieve the same results.
