Festive fun for charity this Christmas

Date:

26th January 2017

This year we donated £250 to the Wansbeck Palliative Care Unit via Bright Northumbria, following the launch of our first festive charity competition.

The competition saw members of our team don festive fancy dress and nominate a charity they would donate the £250 prize towards.

Staff arrived at work in their best costumes, hoping to gain the most public votes via an online survey, the festive character with the highest votes could provide their chosen charity with the prize money.

Team members channelled their inner creativity to dress as Elves, Reindeer and even Santa Claus made an appearance. Receiving a generous 500+ votes, the competition was a huge success.

Antonia Edwards, client marketing manager at Horizon Works, was voted the overall winner of the competition with her elaborate Snow Queen outfit. Antonia nominated the Wansbeck Palliative Care Unit via Bright Northumbria.

The Palliative Care Unit based at Wansbeck General Hospital, Ashington, Northumberland, caters to those needing end of life care. The service aims to provide relief from pain associated with any life-threatening illness and offers support to help patients live as actively as possible.

Speaking of the £250 donation, Antonia said: “Throughout 2016 the Wansbeck Palliative Care Unit provided an exceptional level of care and support to my Grandad in his final months, this made all the difference not only to him but to our family.

“I am thrilled to have won the competition and be able to give something back; I hope that this money goes towards supporting and comforting the families who use the service, and their loved ones.”

Eleanor Grogan, consultant in palliative medicine at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re extremely grateful for this donation and would like to thank everyone who voted to support our palliative care unit at Wansbeck General Hospital.

“We strive to give every one of our families the highest standards of care at what is an extremely difficult time in their lives and it means a lot to our team to hear Antonia’s family’s positive comments.

“All donations go towards improving the experiences of other patients and their families receiving care with us.”

Samantha Davidson, managing director at Horizon Works, said: “Giving back to charity is something the team, and myself, feel passionately about. Christmas is all about going that extra mile to give to others, and our festive competition was inspired by just that.

“I’m delighted with the effort and enthusiasm the team put in, it was a fantastic day in the office and all for a great cause. I would like to congratulate Antonia and thank everybody who voted, this is a gift truly worth giving at Christmas.”
