At the beginning

Watson Burton is a leading law firm with a well-earned reputation for helping its clients to succeed. Offering the full range of commercial law services, it has significant nationwide coverage and provides first class legal advice from offices in Newcastle, Leeds and London.

Key to the firm’s success is a combination of commercial and technical experience delivered with a personal touch, which forms the foundation of many long-standing client relationships.

Horizon Works was appointed to support the commercial law firm’s marketing team with public relations activity. The engagement has also included design and digital projects to promote its’ graduate training program.

Our vision

We were tasked with raising the profile of the law firm within the North East and across the UK, highlighting its specialisms in particular sectors and promoting it services and expertise.

Watson Burton needed to be portrayed as leader in its field, a firm with a depth of commercial experience which could make a real difference to the businesses it works with – from helping then to secure new investment to supporting them in tribunal cases.

Our Approach

We have developed a close working relationship with Watson Burton’s marketing team, solicitors and partners over a four-year period, enabling us to effectively convey the firm’s messaging and specialist capabilities in areas such as technology, university spin-outs, employment, construction and education.

Our approach has also ensured the fluid sharing of information and ensures we have the ability to react quickly to the announcement of major deals.

Watson Burton has maintained and grown its reputation as a leading commercial law firm in the North East and across the UK, with regular coverage in key media outlets.

The Work

Key to our work is our ability to rapidly issue press releases and statements following the completion of major deals, where time is often a major factor.

We undertake PR activities designed to continually keep Watson Burton in the spotlight: press releases on staff, award wins, partnerships and the firm’s graduate recruitment scheme all form part of this work.

We also produce articles on complex legal matters, such as the impact of fintech and the gender pay gap, that position Watson Burton’s legal specialists as expert commentators.

In 2016, we implemented a PR campaign to promote the results of a joint survey carried out by Watson Burton and the North East England Chamber of Commerce – The Watson Burton and NECC Tech Survey 2016. The survey examined issues surrounding geography, infrastructure and finance in the North East tech sector and we promoted the results through a series of press releases and comment articles.

The Results and Beyond

Watson Burton has maintained and grown its reputation as a leading commercial law firm in the North East and across the UK, with regular coverage in key media outlets.

This has been achieved through reacting quickly to deal announcements, building relationships with third parties (such as the investors and clients Watson Burton works with), developing a healthy pipeline of news stories, and positioning the firm’s solicitors as thought leaders.

Our PR activity has secured coverage in regional media outlets including The Journal, North East Times, Contact, Insider Media North East, BQ, Bdaily, Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Business, and trade titles as diverse as Professional Adviser, Academy Today and Water Briefing.

We have also supported the firm’s graduate recruitment campaign with new messaging, a new visual style and marketing collateral, and produced a customer magazine for Watson Burton – Briefly Legal.
