Watson Burton supports MIW in securing London drinking fountain network deal
Durham firm MIW Water Cooler Experts has secured a deal with Thames Water to supply London with a network of water fountains, with the help of Newcastle-headquartered commercial law firm Watson Burton.
It is hoped that the water fountain network will help to reduce the amount of single use plastic waste created by the purchase of plastic water bottles.
Newcastle-headquartered commercial law firm Watson Burton reviewed the framework agreement between MIW, one of the largest independent suppliers of water coolers in the UK, and Thames Water for the supply of water fountains and associated maintenance services.
MIW is dedicated to reducing single use plastic and entered into a deal to work with Thames Water and the Mayor of London to encourage people to keep hydrated on the move by refilling rather than buying new bottles of water. An initial network of 100 drinking water fountains will be available across busy areas of London. The fountains, designed and manufactured by MIW at its Durham base in partnership with US giant Elkay International, have an eye-catching design featuring Thames Water’s iconic water droplet. The company has been supplying, developing and building innovative, high quality water coolers and drinking fountains for more than a quarter of a century.
Watson Burton’s commercial contracts experts were called in by MIW to negotiate the agreement between the two parties. The law firm worked to a tight two-week schedule to ensure MIW was able to start the work in time to have the water fountains available for the summer.
Marc Allison, partner at Watson Burton said: “We were pleased to be instructed by MIW to review and negotiate this agreement. Despite a degree of negotiation between the two parties, the contract was agreed within two weeks so that work could begin. We were delighted to be part of a project that should help reduce single-use plastic waste in London.”
Mike Winter, Managing Director, MIW Water Cooler Experts added: “It was important for us to agree the right terms to ensure this project was able to get underway quickly, and having worked previously with Watson Burton we were confident in their abilities.
“MIW Water Cooler Experts has a long-standing heritage – we’ve been specialising in supplying indoor and outdoor water fountains for 30 years. This latest initiative is another example of cities up and down the UK looking at ways of reducing the amount of waste from single use plastics, which we’re passionate about.
“Rather than the average adult in London buying three plastic water bottles every week, now Londoners on the move can quickly access free, great tasting, water. These latest models of outdoor fountains will refill a 500ml bottle in under seven seconds and are specially designed to be durable and accessible making them ideal for high traffic public areas.”
Watson Burton, which also has offices in Leeds and London, delivers commercial legal services nationwide. Its core practice areas are corporate, employment, real estate, construction and dispute resolution.
