EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Process Industries: Net Zero (PINZ CDT)

SUPPORTING A MAJOR ACADEMIC COLLABORATION

Read on

PINZ CDT is a collaboration between the Process Intensification Group at Newcastle University and the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at the University of York. It is supporting the process sector in its transition to Net Zero through innovative research with industry, and by training the next generation of process sector talent.

The challenge

Focusing on the impact of developments in energy, feedstocks and data on the process industry and its transition to Net Zero, the PINZ CDT is part of the UK’s biggest-ever investment in engineering and physical sciences doctoral skills, totalling more than £1 billion.

Businesses define PhD projects in partnership with the PINZ CDT’s academics. These organisations then benefit from four years of dedicated research time on their challenge areas or on developing new ideas, and are able to connect with a community of Net Zero innovators.

Encouraging businesses to collaborate with the PINZ CDT on PhD projects – and building a community of industry partners – are key goals of the CDT.

The team therefore needed a marketing provider who could create content and assets that would resonate with the CDT’s core business audiences, and support its activities around conferences, exhibitions and presentations.

The benefits of the PINZ CDT and its impact on the process sector needed to be conveyed with clarity and consistency.

What we did

Drawing on our experience of working across the process industry, we created a suite of high impact assets for the PINZ CDT, including an animation, slide deck, brochure, exhibition materials and visual content for social media.

We also shaped key messaging for the centre and developed new content to bring projects and capabilities to life, and tell the stories of the industry partners already working with the PINZ CDT.

The impact

The PINZ CDT team now have a comprehensive suite of focused assets and content to support their outreach activities. From the PINZ CDT Conference 2026 at Newcastle University, to ChemUK in Birmingham and the ChemSpec Europe International Exhibition for Fine and Speciality Chemicals in Cologne, PINZ CDT is engaging businesses with animated content and new marketing collateral.

There’s now a more comprehensive bank of informative content on the PINZ CDT website, and its social media activity has been enhanced with new assets.

“Working with Horizon Works has been fantastic. They’ve helped us promote our CDT to potential industrial partners through engaging, informative content that creatively distils our key messages. “Their knowledge and understanding of the process sector is second-to-none, and we’re excited to keep working with the team as the CDT develops.” " Dr Ryan Siddall, Innovation & Partnerships Manager at Newcastle University
